Playing the Library

Patterned Narratives

This visual book was created in response to the Playing the Library project. The brief required part of the work to be produced using the risograph technique, limited to only two colours. I turned this restriction into a creative opportunity, choosing a blue and green palette to establish a simple yet powerful visual language.

My main inspiration came from the structures and symbolism of carpets and textiles patterns rich in order and visual complexity that provided the foundation for a dynamic design system. I collected and reinterpreted motifs from various library sources, then combined them within a grid-based layout for the cover and inner spreads to maintain overall consistency.

To emphasise the contrast between tactile and precise qualities, part of the publication was printed with risograph, giving it a handmade texture, while the rest was digitally printed for clarity. The final outcome is a book that unites traditional and modern elements into a coherent identity, reflecting the decorative heritage of different cultures while embracing the possibilities of contemporary printmaking.
